Dodson Industrial District is located along the Blue River in the south-central portion of Kansas City, Missouri. This area is prone to frequent flooding, with serious floods having occurred in 1928, 1944, 1951, 1961 and 1990. Less severe flooding occurred in 1958, 1977 and 1984. The National Economic Development (NED) plan provides for a 500-year levee and gate system. This 6800 foot long levee-floodwall runs along the north bank of the Blue River from the Bannister Road Federal Complex upstream to the Bruce R. Watkins Memorial Drive (71 Highway) downstream.
The property investment in Dodson is nearly $240,000,000, made up of 30 commercial/light industrial firms and a public works facility, employing 1,250 people. Dodson is surrounded by several major commercial and industrial centers, residing on 85th Street which is a main east west artery through Kansas City.
